Insulation is a gas

Experimental Gas-Filled Panel insulation from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory consists of several layers of reflective metalized film with a suporting structure of film in between layers to maintain spacing. The voids are filled with an inert gas, as in high-performance windows, to achieve projected insulative values of up to R-15 per inch. Best bets for early uses for the insulation are in appliances and factory-built homes. LBL researchers are now looking for companies to make the insulation.
